In our previous article, we glanced at the Super 1000 tournaments organised by the Badminton World Federation (BWF). In this article, we’ll look at the Super 750 tournaments in badminton.
These tournaments are prominent among the shuttlers, with significant ranking points and prize money on offer. Since only the top-ranked men’s and women’s shuttlers make it to the event, fans often witness close battles between them.
Now, let’s get to know about the BWF World Tour Super 750 level, along with its format, ranking points, and prize money.
BWF World Tour Super 750 Level
The Super 750 is the third level on the BWF World Tour circuit, just behind the Super 1000 level. The tournaments played under this level are eminent, with many top-ranked players vying for the top honour.
These tournaments also provide shuttlers with an opportunity to maximise their earnings while improving their rankings with crucial ranking points.
How many tournaments are part of the Super 750 level?
When the BWF introduced the World Tour structure in 2018, there were five tournaments under the Super 750 level. But from 2023 onwards, the number has increased to six.
The governing body promoted two Super 500 tournaments – India Open and Singapore Open – to the Super 750 level, while they elevated Malaysia Open from the Super 750 to the Super 1000 level.
China Masters, Denmark Open, French Open, and Japan Open have been part of the Super 750 level since 2018. French Open is the oldest competition among these six, having started in 1908.
How many players participate in the Super 750 tournaments?
The number of participants and the qualification criteria for the Super 750 remain the same as those of the Super 1000 level. These six tournaments feature 32 players in singles (men’s and women’s) discipline each, and 16 pairs in doubles (men’s, women’s, and mixed) discipline each.
There are no qualification rounds as such. Rather, the BWF extends an invitation to its member nations to nominate their top-ranked players for these events.
The main criteria of mandatory participation from the top 15 singles players and the top 10 doubles pairs remain in place for all six Super 750 tournaments. The remaining spots are determined by the world rankings of players/pairs.
How does the format of the Super 750 tournaments work?
The format of the Super 750 tournaments is also the same as the Super 1000 competitions. The nominated players and pairs, split into four sections, fight out in the preliminary rounds.
There are two preliminary rounds contested on a knockout basis, with two winners meeting in the quarter-finals. The quarter-final winner of each section then moves into the semis to determine the two finalists.
How many points and prize money do players earn?
The Super 750 tournaments are just below the Super 1000 in terms of ranking points and prize money. All six tournaments under this level offer 11,000 points to the winners, while the runner-up gets 9,350 points.
Speaking of prize money, except for China Masters, the other five tournaments have a prize pool of US$850,000. China Masters, though, distributes US$1,150,000, which is more than the other five competitions.
Here are the points and prize money distribution structure for the Super 750 tournaments:
