After the Super 1000 and Super 750 levels, the Super 500 level occupies Level 4 on the BWF World Tour series. Many top-ranked players and upcoming badminton stars participate in nine BWF World Tour Super 500 tournaments every year.
Each of the tournaments provides US$420,000 as overall prize money along with substantial ranking points that help shuttlers rise up the ladder. Even though many top shuttlers limit their presence to two Super 500 events, the rising stars get a chance to show their mettle in these tournaments.
On that note, here are the nine tournaments part of the BWF World Tour Super 500 level.
1. Arctic Open
The Arctic Open is one of two badminton tournaments the BWF added to the Super 500 level in 2023. Played in Finland, the tournament started back in 1990, though it became an annual affair from 2002 onwards.
Since its inception in the Super 500 level, the competition has been attracting top talent from around the world. The Arctic Open takes place in October every year.
2. Australian Open
Don’t confuse this badminton Australian Open with the tennis Grand Slam competition. These are two completely different tournaments.
This badminton tournament started in 1989, where local Australian shuttlers have displayed their talent. The Australian Open has seen its elevation in the BWF events, with the governing body upgrading it to Super 500 from Super 300 in 2023.
Australia’s Peter Blackburn is the most successful player in this event, winning six men’s doubles titles. Among Indians, Saina Nehwal (2014 and 2016) and Srikanth Kidami (2017) have left their mark in the Australian Open.
3. Canada Open
The Canada Open is the other tournament the BWF upgraded to the Super 500 level in 2023. It skipped the Super 300 level to jump from the Super 100 to 500 levels.
The Canada Open has been taking place every year since 1957. After its elevation to the Super 500, Canada now holds the tournament in July every year.
England’s Ray Stevens and Canada’s Marjory Shedd have won five doubles titles each in men’s and women’s disciplines, respectively. From India, Jwala Gutta-Ashwini Ponnappa (2015), B Sai Praneeth (2016), Manu Attri-B. Sumeeth Reddy (2016), and Laksya Sen (2023) have won the Canada Open once each.
