List: All BWF World Tour Super 1000 Tournaments in Badminton

The Super 1000 badminton tournaments are highly distinguished among the top-ranked players. These tournaments belong to the second-highest level in the BWF World Tour series organised by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

The BWF has categorised four badminton tournaments under the Super 1000 level. And we’ll look at all four of them in detail below.

1. All England Open Badminton Championships

The oldest badminton tournament in the world, the All England Open, is an annual event taking place every year in March. It’s the first open tournaments to be organised in badminton, having started almost 125 years ago in 1899.

The All England Open commands prestige among the shuttlers, which was once considered the unofficial World Championships. Held in England’s Birmingham, the competition was among the three tournaments to be accorded the Super 1000 status in 2018.

Former England shuttler George Alan Thomas, who was the brainchild behind the Thomas Cup, is the most successful player in tournament’s history, with 21 titles to his name.

2. China Open

The China Open attracts many top-ranked shuttlers thanks to the ranking points and prize money on offer. This is the second Super 1000 tournament on the BWF World Tour Series.

The China Open has seen the rise and dominance of many Chinese shuttlers since its inception in 1986. This competition rounds up the Super 1000 level in September every year.

South Korea’s Lee Yong-dae is the most successful shuttler in the China Open, winning five men’s doubles and two mixed doubles titles.

3. Indonesia Open

Started four years before the China Open, the Indonesia Open has been among the initial three tournaments under the Super 1000 level. The tournament has been hosted in several cities across Indonesia, showcasing the talented players from the country.

The Indonesia Open takes place between the All England Open and China Open in June every year. Ardy Wiranata, Taufik Hidayat, and Lee Chong Wei have won the most singles (men’s) titles (six each), while Tri Kusharjanto and Minarti Timur have claimed six mixed doubles titles.

4. Malaysia Open

Malaysia has been a force in international badminton, having produced some legendary shuttlers like Taufik Hidayat and Lee Chong Wei. The Malaysia Open hosted by them is the latest entrant to the Super 1000 level after the BWF elevated the tournament’s status in 2023.

The first edition of the Malaysia Open took place back in 1937. This tournament acts as an opener of the Super 1000 level, as it takes place in January every year.

Lee Chong Wei is the undisputed king of the Malaysia Open, having won the men’s singles title 12 times.
